STORIES FROM THE FIELD

I always got to keep my mind open to learning. Whatever it is. You can learn all your life.

– Journeyman Inside Wireman

Dad was a very hands-on type person. Always putzing around in the garage. He encouraged me. And if I showed the initiative, he would show me different things and take time to answer my questions. I loved that. It was a great relationship. I worked for him all through my education.

My mom taught me about taking care of people, doing things for people. She did things for people because she loved them; she wanted to help them. Mom and Dad never had a lot of money, but us kids really never wanted. They sacrificed and taught us great character. I can’t say enough about that. I was very influenced by my upbringing.

What you worked for all your life can be wiped out, except for your character. No one can take that away from you. I want to be respected as a good person, as a friendly person. If people need a helping hand they can call me. That’s very important to me.

I treat people the way I want to be treated. I’m fair, honest, and carry out good ethics. I’m a straight shooter. When you’re honest, people can see your character. I am open, straightforward, outspoken, and I always tell the truth.

If I make a mistake, I’ll tell you. I’ll bring it out in the open—yeah I made a mistake here, we gotta see what we can do now to overcome it. Anybody can make a mistake, but it takes a man to admit to his mistake.

As far as I’m concerned, you’re an apprentice all your life. Because the day that you stop learning is the day that you’re gonna lose your profession. I always got to keep my mind open to learning. Whatever it is. You can learn all your life.

So, I take advantage of a lot of education because more education makes your job a lot easier. You know the right questions to ask, the layout of the job, how things are gonna work. Through experience you gain this confidence in yourself that, yeah, I can do that job.
